Year 7 Rottnest Camp

Each year our Year 7 students head to Rottnest Island for a weeklong camp. Various hands-on learning experiences complement their studies and provide opportunities for self-development.

The first leg of the journey is the bus trip to Perth and the ferry trip to Rottnest. Once they arrive on the island, the learning begins!

Students oversee the budgeting, meal planning, cooking and maintenance of their dorms. They are well supported by both parent helpers and school staff, and students raise to the task each year. This is a fantastic learning experience that develops their independence and life skills.

Students attend various excursions that support their learning in HASS. There is a particular focus on Aboriginal Australia, and how water is used in our world.

There is still plenty of time left over to have fun! Students enjoy riding bikes, watching wildlife, playing mini golf, swimming and fishing. There are even a few night activities scheduled, including a trip to the cinema. Here is a tip, don’t forget to pack a torch. The spotlight games around the dorms are VERY popular.

Year 8 Camp to Quaranup

Located on a Class A Nature Reserve, Camp Quaranup is an awesome location for our Year 8 camp.

The focus of this camp is to develop our students’ understanding of MBCC’s behaviour matrix of –

  • Being Your Best
  • Being Respectful
  • Being Responsible
  • Being Resilient

The activities are designed to develop and improve students’ social and physical well-being. Students participate in physical pursuits, such as bushwalking, canoeing, raft making, archery and regaining. The team-building activities are always fun!

Year 9 and 10 Outdoor Ed Camps

The Great Southern affords many extraordinary locations for our Outdoor Ed Camps. From mountain country to the rugged south coast, many adventures can be had.

Some of the most popular activities include hiking, kayaking, bike riding and orienteering.  In semester 1 2022, students rode the WOW Trial and a section of the Mundi Bindi. In semester 2, they will do an overnight hike on the Bibbulmun Trail.

The Outdoor Ed camps provide dynamic learning environments that contribute to the development of our student’s social, emotional, and physical well-being.

Tour to Sydney and Canberra

The Mount Barker Community College Tour to Sydney and Canberra is for Year 10 students.

The camp runs over 7 days and commences in Sydney. Students sightsee popular areas such as –

  • Bondi Beach
  • Luna Park
  • Sydney Cricket Ground
  • Taronga Zoo
  • Sydney Harbour Bridge

There is even the possibility of a historical Ghost Tour at The Rocks at night.

The students then travel to Canberra to visit and experience some exceptional places. In 2023, the plan is to visit the CSIRO, Australian Institute of Sport, National Portrait Gallery, The Royal Australian Mint, Mount Ainsley, ANZAC Parade, Parliament House, and the Telstra Tower at night. Students will then travel to Berridale to go skiing in the snow! The camp wraps up with a visit to the Deep Space Communication Complex and Questacon.

Perth SIDE Camp

The Perth SIDE Camp is for students studying subjects through the School of Isolated and Distance Education. It provides an opportunity for students to cover the specific course content in a real-world learning environment and gain more face-to-face instruction with various academics and professionals.

Highlights of this camp include a trip to the BioDiscovery Centre at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, Swan Valley, Optus Stadium, Perth Zoo, Central Park Tower, Perth Museum and according to Mr Bedford, the nightlife of Leederville is an eye opener when they go out for ice-cream.

Students enjoy their city living experiences, learning to navigate public transport during peak hour, planning and preparing meals within a budget and learning how to live and work cohesively within a group.

Year 11 and 12 Country Week

Mount Barker Community College students in Year 11 and 12 participate in the annual Country Senior High Schools Week, otherwise known as Country Week. Established in 1924, this multi-sport carnival is hosted by School Sport WA.  Country Week attracts around 3000 students from 46 rural schools around WA and it is an extremely popular event for Mount Barker Community College students.

The carnival includes sports such as AFL, hockey, basketball, dance, speech and debating, volleyball, netball, indoor cricket, and touch football.
